What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is a national scheme that funds reasonable and necessary support for people with disabilities. It is designed to help participants lead an ordinary life by providing access to services and support based on their needs. Learn More about the NDIS Program.

Who is eligible for the NDIS?

Eligibility is determined by several criteria, including:

  • Age: Generally, you must be under 65 when you apply.
  • Residency: You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
  • Disability Impact: You need to have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities.

For more detailed criteria, refer to the official NDIS website, read our detailed Guide or speak with an NDIS specialist at My Mobile Plan Manager.

How do I apply for the NDIS Program?

To apply for NDIS funding, first contact the NDIA via phone or the NDIS website. Complete the access request form with evidence of your disability and its impact, then attend a planning meeting with an NDIA representative to discuss your goals and required support.

Finally, the NDIA will review your application and inform you of your eligibility. Make sure to gather all necessary documents before starting the process.

What can I expect during a planning meeting?

During your planning meeting, you will:

  • Discuss your current situation and future goals.
  • Identify and let them know the areas where you need support (e.g., daily living, community participation, employment).
  • Review potential supports and services.
  • Decide on the level of funding required to meet your goals.

This meeting is collaborative—feel free to ask questions and ensure your voice is heard.

What types of funding and support does the NDIS provide?

The NDIS funds a range of supports, including:

  • Core Supports: Daily activities, assistance with personal care, and community participation.
  • Capacity Building: Skills development, therapies, and training to enhance independence.
  • Capital Supports: Funding for equipment, home modifications, or vehicles. Supports are designed to be “reasonable and necessary” and tailored to your individual goals and needs.

Learn more about funding here.

How do I know which supports I am entitled to?

Your NDIS plan is based on your individual needs and goals. During your planning meeting, the NDIA or your plan manager will help you understand:

  • The support that can help you meet your goals.
  • How each support aligns with your personal circumstances.
  • The funding allocated to each support category.

Also, regular reviews ensure your plan remains relevant as your needs change.

What are the different NDIS plan management options?

There are three primary plan management options:

  • Agency-Managed: The NDIA manages the funds and payments to providers.
  • Plan-Managed: A third-party plan manager (such as an NDIS plan management agency) manages the funding, providing more flexibility in provider choice while still offering administrative support.
  • Self-Managed: You take full responsibility for managing your NDIS funds and paying providers directly. Each option offers different levels of control and administrative support—choose the one that best fits your comfort and capacity.
What are the benefits of using a plan management agency?

A plan management agency can:

  • Simplify administrative tasks by handling invoices and payments.
  • Help you track spending and manage your budget.
  • Offer guidance on provider choices and industry best practices.
  • Provide expertise on funding optimization strategies, ensuring you maximize the benefits of your plan.
What rights do NDIS participants have?

Participants have several rights, including:

  • Choice and Control: Decide which supports and providers best meet their needs.
  • Transparency: Access clear information about funding, supports, and plan management.
  • Respect and Dignity: Receive services that respect their individuality and cultural background.
  • Grievance Resolution: Have access to support and avenues for dispute resolution if issues arise.

These rights ensure that the NDIS remains responsive to the needs of participants.

How often should my NDIS plan be reviewed?

NDIS plans are generally reviewed annually. However, if your needs change significantly, you may request an earlier review. Regular reviews help ensure that your plan remains relevant and responsive to your evolving circumstances.

Can I change my plan management option after my plan is approved?

Yes. Participants can change their plan management option at any time. Whether you wish to move from agency-managed to self-managed funds, or vice versa, contact your NDIA or plan management agency for guidance on the process.
